強檔「看電影學美語」單元簡介

很多觀眾到電影院看電影時，一定都會覺得為何背了這麼多年的英文單字，看電影時還是聽不懂主角在講什麼？這是因為台灣的英語教育長期以來只重視「讀」和「寫」，並且只教正經八百的英文用法。

但是，電影裡的主角可不是大文豪，每天儘講一堆文謅謅的對白，反而只是非常平凡的句子與大量的非正式口語用法。這就是為何我們背了這麼多的單字，但卻不知道在美國日常生活中的實際應用方式。

EZ 好用句1：「try to score」是指「在考試中得分」嗎？

你或許知道「try to score」直譯為在比賽或考試中得分，不過要是聽到老美說score with somebody時，千萬不要傻傻的解釋為「和某人一起得分」，這句話其實在老美口中其實是「和某人上床」的意思。

EZ 好用句2：「Pick it up」只有「把東西撿起來」的意思嗎？

這句片語的字面上意義為「把東西撿起來」。但是在不同的使用情境下，當老美說Pick it up時，也可以表達「快一點啦」的意思。下次看電影時，特別注意一下劇中主角的上下文，你也可以輕鬆掌握這句片語的道地用法喔！

In my time as senior English editor at EZTalk, I’ve always tried to keep in mind the days many years ago when I first began studying Chinese in college. How many years ago? Don’t ask! I’d previously taken a French class, but soon became bored when I found there were so many similarities between French and English.

It was time to try something completely different—and what could be more different than Chinese? The thrill of the unknown made learning Chinese so fun that I forgot I was in class. Of course, memorizing vocabulary and doing grammar drills was still a chore. But as soon as I’d mastered the basics, my new language skills opened a window onto a whole new world. We began reading original articles and stories, and even watching movies from Taiwan and China. From that point on, learning vocabulary and grammar was never boring, because I got to put it to use right away. I ended up making Chinese my major, and to this day I’ve never lost my passion for using language as a tool to better understand different cultures and ways of thinking.

Living in Taiwan, I’ve found that so many people see English as a means to an end, whether passing tests or getting ahead in one’s career. Those are worthy goals, of course, but the language can be so much more than that. English can provide insight into Western culture, help you communicate with people from other countries, and—because English is the international language—open up a whole world of knowledge.

So at EZTalk, we not only focus on vocabulary and grammar basics, but also provide readers with interesting articles on a wide variety of subjects to make the language come alive. As editor, I sincerely hope that our readers can develop the same passion for English that I developed for Chinese all those years ago.
